Women's Basketball Championship History: 1982 through Present

Women's basketball championship history dates back to 1982 when Louisiana Tech defeated Cheyney State 76 to 62 in Norfolk, Virginia. Five schools have won two or more titles in the history of the NCAA women's basketball tournament. Tennessee has won the NCAA women's tourney eight times followed by Connecticut with five titles and Stanford, Louisiana Tech, and USC with two NCAA women's national championships each. Old Dominion, Texas, Texas Tech, North Carolina, Purdue, Notre Dame, Baylor, and Maryland all have one title. The 2009 NCAA women's national championship will be played at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri on April 8. Selection Monday is March 16 with first round games on Saturday, March 21 and Sunday, March 22 followed by second round action March 23 and 24.
